I’m Nikema Williams, and I am your State Senator in the 39th district which includes the cities of Atlanta, East Point, College Park, Union City and South Fulton. I serve on the influential Economic Development and Tourism, Retirement, State and Local Government Operations, Urban Affairs, MARTOC, and Special Judiciary committees.
I was recently elected as the first Black woman to be Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia and have served in multiple leadership roles in Georgia, including Vice-Chair for the Democratic Party of Georgia, Chair of the 13th Congressional District, 1st Chair of the Fulton County Democratic party and as a delegate for Georgia in the 2008 and 2012 Democratic National Convention. I also served as the National Committeewoman for the Young Democrats of Georgia and was named a Woman of Influence in 2011 by the Atlanta Business League.
Since moving to Atlanta 17 years ago, I have dedicated myself to advocating for the women and families of Georgia. I served as the Vice-President of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Southeast, Inc. and am passionate about protecting women’s rights and accessible health care in Georgia. I currently serve as the Deputy Political Director at National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) and the Georgia State Director at Care in Action, the advocacy and political arm of NDWA.
I have been recognized as one of Georgia Trend Magazine’s Forty under Forty, Power 30 Under 30, Outstanding Atlanta, and Who’s Who in Black Atlanta. I am a graduate of Lead Atlanta, New Leaders Council and the Women’s Campaign School at Yale.
I was born in Columbus and raised by my grandparents just across the Chattahoochee River, in Smiths, Alabama. They taught me to value hard work, determination, and service to one’s community.
These values led me to Talladega College, a private liberal arts Historically Black College in Talladega, Alabama, where I became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Biology.
My husband, Leslie Small, and I reside in Atlanta’s Historic Vine City neighborhood with our 3 year old son, Carter and our two rescue Yorkshire Terriers, Ginger and Belle. We are members of Central United Methodist Church.
As your Senator, I work to provide everyone with the tools and opportunity to thrive, not merely survive. Growing up, I experienced firsthand the challenges that too many families face struggling to make ends meet.
Together, we’ll work to overcome these challenges!
